Women who had been treated as second class citizens in the society for centuries have socialized due to the living conditions changed by industrialization. Socialized women have founded women’s organizations in order to gain equal rights. The unprecedented change in the social and political status of Turkish women during the Republican period drew the attention of global women’s organizations to Turkey. International Alliance of Women, which is one of the umbrella organizations of women in the world, decided to assemble its 12th congress in Istanbul. Istanbul, which is appropriate in terms of appealing to large crowds, hosted the organization’s broadest participated assembly. This assembly in which women’s rights were discussed and important decisions were taken, was regarded as an opportunity of publicity and was supported by Turkey.
