Abstract

Author(s): Cihat TANIŞ

Gerze is a district of Sinop lying in the Western Black Sea section of the greater Black Sea region. This small pretty district of Black Sea burnt to the ground due to a conflagration on February 13, 1956. The local people were at a loss as they had not experienced such a great fire before. As a result of the disaster, 18 people including a baby died, 833 houses and 300 shops became unuseable. After the fire, Democrat Party Goverment issued the law no. 6683 in order to revive and relieve the district. The local people tried to pick up the pieces but have not forgot the Gerze fire, one of the greatest fires of the Republican era.
