Author(s): Aydın ARAS

Alawism (Being Kizilbash until XIX. century) has become a field which attracts the attention of scientific (academic) environments since XIX. Century. Discussing Alawaism (Kizilbash) on scientific researches first thought to have started with Joseph von Hammer’s famous work ‘the Ottoman History’ citing ‘Kizilbash’ and ‘Bektashis’. The process continued with famous orientalists J. G. Taylor, P. Brown, George Jacop, F.W. Hasluck, J. Kinsley Birge and Babinger’s studies. As for Turkey, the first study on Alawism started with Mehmet Fuat Köprülü’s ‘the First Sufis in Turkish Literature’ published in 1918. Thanks to the great efforts of the famous scientists Baha Said Bey, Yusuf Ziya Yörükân, Abdulbaki Gölp?narl?, Alawism has become an academic research area. Although researches has increased on Alawism-Bektashism fields in terms of quality and quantity in due course, stil, there hasn’t been an unanimous description of the content of Alawism yet. Our research discusses the orientalists’ studies which take place at the last half of XIX. Century and the last quarter of XX. Century. Within this period of time, after dissertations on the origins of Alawism are compiled, antithesis of the local researches on Alawism will be analyzed by me. The aim of is research is to introduce the envisagement of the orientalists and reveal the dissertations on the origins of Alawism with holistic view.
