A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO TEACHING HISTORY OF TURKISH EDUCATION: PAINTING EXHIBITION

Turkish history of education is a lesson which examines our educational ideas, thoughts, corporations and experiences till today and light the way for resolution of today’s education. One of the purposes of the educational faculties is trying to make education problems of Turkey and Turkish world comprehended by students within historical depth and unity and direct them to take lessons from past experiences and find solutions. However in the current mechanism the efficiency of the Turkish Education History lesson is a matter of debate. Student oriented approaches which will save this lesson from being a chronological memorization lesson and increase student interest and make them comprehend the importance of the lesson. In this context Turkish Education History lesson was conducted by project based learning approach, which is one of the modern learning methods, in 2011- 2012 academic year, in Inonu University, Education Faculty, Art Teaching Department. In this frame, a project aiming to develop a positive attitude from 3rd grade students towards Turkish Education History lesson and effective learning, was developed. The Turkish Education History of 2500 years starting from Huns until today, was visualized by students by using painting, sculpture and graph and an exhibition was held within the Education Faculty body consisting of the 58 created pieces of art. After the exhibition which received the appreciation of lecturers and education faculty students, the ideas of students having the Turkish Education history lesson were received about the process of project based learning approach used in the lesson. In this study, case study which is among the qualitative research patterns was conducted, semi-configured interview was performed with 22 volunteer students by taking their voice records. From the interview results, it was understood that while most of the students had a negative thoughts and attitudes towards the lesson at the beginning of the term, their thoughts and attitudes towards the lesson changed in positive direction after the project based learning.
