Mass media such as newspapers and magazines aim to inform the societies they are in. The information transmitted by these periodical publications, positive or negative, encourages people to act on a common ground, allowing them to acquire useful information for themselves. The publication and dissemination of newspapers and magazines, which are a feature of innovation in the Ottoman State, cause certain first to emerge. People who work on the histroy of sports refer to the writings of Ali Ferruh Bey’s Servet-i Fünun. This reference carries an elementary quality in the Turkish press that is relevant to the history of sports. However, the differences between the date of publication and the date of publication of Servet-i Fünun have been missed. In this regard, a review of the Ceride Newspaper which began publication on 14 August 1890 in Edirne has revealed a new knowledge. The article which was published on 15 March 1891 of the journal is the first article about sports in Turkish press. “A Few Words About Fencing” discusses about the benefits of fencing, its significance, and its examples in Europe. This paper will examine Mehmed ?aban’s article about fencing, which holds an important place in the history of sports, and will give information about fencing. In addition, a brief history of fencing will be expressed and the development of this sport in the Ottoman Empire will be mentioned. In addition, Ali Ferruh Bey’s examples on the article series of Servet-i Fünun will be given in order to be able to have an opinion about writing series.
