In the Ottoman modernization process, especially after the Tanzimat Period, fine arts have a special place. The innovations that we can read as state-modernization processes, such as the establishment of the Sanayi-i Nefise (School of Fine Arts), as well as the modernization demands from the civilian wing of the society have also had the chance to develop in this process. The important instruments of western art such as opera and operetta were included in the culture and art inventory of the Ottoman Empire during this period. In this process, non-Muslim Ottoman subjects played an important role. As a matter of fact, the first original examples of the modern theater were produced by Güllü Agop and Dikran Çuhac?yan who were Armenian origin. The subject of this article is to provide a modest contribution to the search for the musical path of modernization in the late Ottoman and early Republican period by presenting a section of the life and works of Dikran Çuhac?yan, one of the distinctive identities of modern opera and operetta in the imperial geography.
