Traditional Turkish music has passed through various stages depending on the understanding of art during the period of its history. These developmental stages are influenced by the conditions of the time, such as the sound system, the makam and the procedures, that is, the theories and parts of the music, as well as some innovations. When we look at the available sources, the song we encountered in its first examples in the 16th century, despite its structural changes, maintained its popularity for centuries and maintained its existence as the most widely used verbal composition in Turkish music. This article deals with the most common form of song used in Turkish art music verbal forms, the meaning of word, the place of Divan Literature, the characteristic structure of this composition, the composition of the composers in Turkish music history, the types of songs in current practice and the degenerations they have experienced over time. Especially the influence of the Westernization movement which started in the 19th century has been thoroughly examined in this article, especially in the light of Hac? Arif Bey and his innovations, which has changed and preserved its vitality nowadays.
