From the painful and tortured punishments of the past, today's modern society has reached to a stage where given a second chance to criminals for their crimes. The mentality and practice of punishment has reached a structure in which the concept of rehabilitation idea and restorative justice is valid all over the world today. This reached stage is also not a final destination. The discussions in this area still continue with their theoretical and practical aspects. Many of the discussions are about finding a acceptable justified ethical basis for punishments by society. In this context, this study aims to discover the relation and interest of the punishment to the society and to reveal the possibility of a new academic discipline which can be expressed as sociology of punishment. In this study it is aimed with a comparative historical method the different aspects of punishment from a perspective that sociological point of view prevails.
