AMAZON QUEENS MOSAIC OF HALEPLIBAHCE: ICONOGRAPHIC RELATIONS WITH MOSAICS Of ANTIOCH, SEPHHORIS, OULED AGLA AND APAMEA

Abstract

Author(s): Sehnaz ERASLAN

Amazons were (female- warriors) associated with battles of Greeks in Greek mythology. Their battles were popular subjects of ancient Greek art. Although this theme was depicted especially on pottery and in monumental sculpture adorning some of the most important buildings, there are a few examples in mosaic art. When we analyze the samples gained from Turkey (Antioch, Edessa), Syria (Apamea), Israel (Sephhoris), Algeria (Ouled Agla) we determine that Amazons were generally depicted in amazonmakie, votive, entertainment or hunting scenes in mosaic art. In this article an evaluation is made of the typology and iconography of the Amazon Queens Mosaic of Haleplibahce in Edessa (anl?urfa), taking into consideration the examples of the depiction of Amazon from different geographies.
