In this research, it is aimed to determine the progress and results of concept-based applications in basic design courses.The study, in which the action research design was used, was carried out in the Basic Design I course given in the Department of Fine Arts Education at Education Faculty of Gazi University in the fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. The participants of the study consisted of the researcher giving the course and 15 students taking the Basic Design I course. The data were collected over a period of 15 weeks. Data collection tools of the study included personal information form, video recordings, semi-structured interview, researcher diaries and student diaries. The data obtained were analysed by using descriptive analysis method. As a result, it was determined that the students gained experience in conceptual thinking and design process, and developed awareness about the function of the concept in the design process. In addition, it was concluded that the students gained knowledge and experience about the use of symbols, icons and similar visual indicators that express concepts in the design process. Besides, it was observed that the visual literacy skills of the students improved and they acquired information about visual culture.
