A lot of documents about ownership and possession had been used at the Ottoman Empire. Sened-i Bahri is one of those documents which mostly seen at 19th century. The Sened-i Bahri documents are formed just like Berat documents and they point out the size, type and ownership of vessels. Its understood that this procedure had been started at the begining of Greek Rebellion to check the vessels. This practice which is aiming to gain control over marritime trade and vessels was consisted with the spirit of Tanzimat so it continued at that era and afterwards. The Sened-i Bahri documents were recognised as legal documents at purchases and sales, inheritances and judicial conflicts, so the practice is continued at Turkish Republic era. Besides international law of the sea’s standardized demands seems to be effective on emergence and continuation of Sened-i Bahri practice.
