Nam?k Kemal is one of the most important playwrights in Turkish Literature of the Tanzimat Era. With his six plays, he is one of the pioneers of western style (modern) theatre in Turkish literature. Between the years 1873-1876, he was exile in Cyprus due to political reasons. It is a fact that during his time in Cyprus he left deep traces within the Turkish Cypriot social life and literature. In Kaytazzâde Mehmet Nâz?m’s play Safa yahut Netice-i ?btilâ which was published in 1909, we can see the influence of Nam?k Kemal’s theatre, especially of his play titled Zavall? Çocuk (The Miserable Child). This article tries to point out Nam?k Kemal’s and his play Zavall? Çocuk’s influence on Turkish Cypriot literature during the era of Westernization. The main purpose of this text is to unclothe the connection between Kaytazzde’s Safa yahut Netice-i ?btilâ and Zavall? Çocuk. In this context, this article attempts to study Kaytazzâde’s play in relation to the play Zavall?
