COMMENTS OF ETERNAL COVENANT IN THE HISTORY OF SUFISM

Abstract

Author(s): Muammer CENGÄ°Z

The idea of eternal covenant (al-misaq al-azalî) has been a key concept in Sufism with regard to God-man relationship in Islam. Accordingly, during the history of tasawwuf there has been arised a good amount of literature around this concept in connection with wujûd (existence), ma’rifa (knowledge), tawhid (unity-oneness of God) and samâ (sufi listining). In this paper, the idea of eternal covenat will be dealth with on the basement of the great sufi pioner Junayd’s approach and the light of other sufis’ perspectives. Thus it will be shown that the concept of al-misaq al-azali is the core subject of Tasawwuf and how this concept relates to others and sometimes originates them.
