Abstract

Author(s): Eyüp ZENGİN

In this study the noun phrases and adjective phrases in Turkish and German and their deep structure are explained comparatively. The formation of the noun phrases and adjective phrases in the deep structure and their reflection to the surface structure are presented within the framework of transformative generative grammar and the deep-surface structure relations. These two group, taking the first two place among the word group as noun phrase and adjective phrase, have an important place in the syntax of Turkish. They act as an element of sentence in the surface structure and take the most of the affixes that can be added to a noun. Although the noun phrases and adjective phrases in German is formed slightly differently from Turkish, they generally show the same characteristics in terms of the function of elements in the sentence. Noun phrases and adjective phrases are neutral structures in the syntax of the surface structure. However, when these phrases are examined within the light of the transformative generative grammar, it is understood that their deep structure is based on the independent clauses formed with finite verbs. While the noun phrases and adjective phrases are noun clauses in the deep structure, they are reflected to the surface structure as the noun phrases and adjective phrases as a result of the transformations. These transformations can be expressed in the context of transformative generative grammar theory and deep structuresurface structure relations.
