This study aims to investigate the learning behaviour during text comprehension of Turkish students who are learning German as a third language after English. For this purpose, this study contributes to explore the cognitive abilities that help readers to comprehend texts which are written in German as foreign language. Therefore the study considers variables that determine the comprehension of linear texts. These variables are the language competence, and background knowledge. To this end, data have been collected in order to test the influence of the mentioned variables on text comprehension of learners studying German as their third language. The findings indicate that the language competences of English and background knowledge are the most important variables for the understanding of German texts of Turkish acquirer of German as a third language. Regarding this finding, this present study intends to provide an explanation for learners behaviour involved in text comprehension.
