Abstract Sport is an important tool that brings together people of different religions, languages and races as part of universal culture. Sport is seen as a very important effort for children in the age of growth and development to grow healthily, physically and mentally. People in the immediate surroundings have a big role in the selection of sports. The universe of the research is 7-12 age group children attending summer and winter sports school in football and basketball branch. The study group of the research consists of 287 volunteers, students in football and basketball branches attending these schools. Descriptive scanning method was used in the research. The Branch Participation Scale, developed by Sunay et al. (1996), consists of 27 items and 3 sub-dimensions. The scale was applied to children in the 7-12 age group attending the Summer and Winter Sports School organized by Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality. The data showed normal distribution and it was decided to perform parametric tests. The scores of the students participating in the research from the scale; frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test for independent samples in binary variables, one-way variance analysis in multiple variables. As a result, it was determined that Physical education teachers were not effective in the selection of the branches of the students, whereas the impact of parents and siblings was high with an average of 4.0488. It was concluded that the effect of friend and peer group in the branch selection was moderate with an average of 3,5540.
