The most important point that needs to be addressed in order to prevent fire losses is the existence of a well-defined fire legislationBy “the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire”, which came into force in 2002, positive steps have been taken in terms of newly constructed buildings. The definition of “existing buildings” in the regulation has different contents in the subsequent years. Changes in the definition of existing building within the scope of the legislation caused these structures to continue their life cycle without the necessary measures to be taken against the risk of fire. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the existing buildings that are excluded from the fire legislation requirements due to they were constructed before the force of the legislation. For this purpose, the fire legislation has been evaluated in terms of the changes in existing building definition.
