In this article, the formation of the name Pishpek; the transformation of the name of the castle of Pishpek, which was built by the Hokand Khanate in the Chuy Valley in 1825, into the name of the city of Bishkek, will be examined. It is seen that after the arrival and settlement of the nomadic Kyrgyz and Russians to the lands around the fortress of Pi?kek, a new city was formed and its name was given as B?shkek, which is a slightly changed form of the name of the old castle of the city. In this context, from translations of some Chinese sources into Russian and Turkish to the Divanü Lugat-it-Türk of Mahmud of Kashgar were examined whether the city existed before the 19th century or not. Besides, the sources of Russian history and Hokand Khanate, the contemporary Kyrgyz and Persian historical works, and Tarih-i Re?idi will be applied to elaborate the existence and the meaning of the name of the city of Bishkek until 1917.
