Hamza Rüstem (1872-1971) is recognized as the first Muslim Turkish studio photographer in Izmir. He was born in Crete and started his career in Candie, Crete in 1896 after his education in Istanbul. Rüstem learned all the details of photography from Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz. When Bediz decided to go to Istanbul in 1909, he handed over his photography studio “Photographeion Rahmizade Behaeddin” with all its equipment to Hamza Rüstem, who worked as an apprentice near him. Rüstem gave the name “Phographeion Bahaeddin succr. Hamza Rüstem” to his studio and then went on to open photography studios in ?zmir in 1925.
