In the Turkish culture, in addition to giving a name, tradition of giving a nickname is also commonly seen. Nicknames vary and form according to values, beliefs and the cultural properties of each society. In this study, nicknames, which are important symbols for easily recognizing of people living together, has been discussed in Birgi Town example. Temettûat Registers of Birgi Town recorded in 1845 and belonged to the seventeen neighborhoods constitute the main source of this study. Nicknames which are discussed under the research are seen to be widely used in Birgi Town. In such a way, it is confirmed that households which have a nickname compose %87 of all the households. Head of the household’s various features like socio-economical status, profession, distinctive physical appearance, where he comes from and ethnic origins take part while giving the nickname. Eventually, with this study, nicknames which have a significant function in cultural permanency and moving to posterity are aimed to present in Birgi Town example.
