Jovkov’s place in the history of Bulgarian literature is in many ways exceptional.Through his work Bulgarian literature in general and Bulgarian prose in particular,have attained international standarts of achievement. The great German writer Thomas Mann included Jovkov’s story “The Sin of Ivan Belin” in his anthology Die Schönsten Erzählungen der Welt (The Most Beautiful Stories of the World,1956), the only story in Balkan literature so honored. Ivo Andri,the Yugoslav Nobel prize winner for literature (1963), has acknowledged his indebtedness to Jovkov,who,he believes possesses an unusual ability to raise regional values to the level of universal significance.
