Language policies are important facts which governments put excessive emphasis on. Governments carry out certain language policies within and outside of their boundaries. While the policies they implement within their borders are for ensuring national integrity, the policies outside of their borders are for expansionism. This situation is an observable fact considering countries which pursued a colonialist mindset in the past especially like France. France is a country where many languages are spoken apart from its official language, French, within its borders. In addition to this, France adopts language policy based upon national integrity. Outside the borders, France follows expansionist language policy around the world, especially in Africa where old colonies exists. On the other hand, the European Union is based on language diversity. The aim of this study is to discuss language policies of France within the context of European Union.
