LOOKING AT THE POETRY IN THE MIRROR OF MEMORY: THE METAPHOR OF MEMORY IN THE MODERN TURKISH POETRY

Metaphors have an aesthetical function which shows imagination and creativity of poets. In addition, metaphors also have some peculiarities that they expose the user’s thinking processes and way of thinking. Besides, metaphors have a quality of determining thoughts rather than being influenced way of thinking. This makes examination of metaphors in poems a necessary and significant task. In this framework, firstly, the concept of memory, an important notion in poems, will be focused on. Then, poems of such poets as Yahya Kemal Beyatl?, Ahmet Hamdi Tanp?nar, Necip Faz?l K?sakürek, Ahmet Muhip D?ranas, Behçet Necatigil, Edip Cansever and lhan Berk will be examined in order to undersand why and how they used some words as memory metaphor. By using selected memory metaphors, it will also be evaluated how poets perceived past and life and how they thought.
