The article handles madrasah-authority relation in the Ottoman period in three phases after giving a brief history of the madrasahs. The meaning of madrasahs for the Ottoman administration, the nature of network of relations between the madrasah and the authority, religious and societal reflections of the relations, splits in the history of madrasahs, and causes-effects of these splits are pointed in classical period, post-classical period and regression period. Revival of madrasah-authority relations and compulsory conditions of this revival are also dealt with in the article. Eventually the reapproaching between the madrasah and the authority led to the divergence of madrasahs from their original paradigm. And deviating from the paradigm caused the madrasahs to fail in retaining the essence of their internal dynamics for a long time. The deviation from the paradigm has also exposed the madrasahs to criticisms that began in the Tanzimat period and have continued until today.
