Structures consisting of one letter or consisting of more than one letter is called al-hurûfu’l-mukataa at the beginning of some surahs in the Qur'an. Whether the meaning of al-hurûfu’l-mukattaa in the Quran is known or not is widely discussed within the framework of the mute?abih. Is the meaning of these letters known? If the meaning of these letters is known, questions such as “what is the meaning of al-hurûfu’l-mukattaa? formed the main subject of the discussion. The possibility of knowing the meaning of these letters has brought up the issue of irab of these letters. The issue of irab of al-hurûfu’l-mukataa is discussed in relation to the meanings of these letters in the classical tafsirs. There are two tendencies among scholars in the field of al-hurûfu’l-mukataa. The general tendency is that the meaning of alhurûfu’l-mukataa is not known and these letters are from verses oj mute?abihat. Some scholars say, it is possible to know the meaning of al-hurûfu’l-mukataa. However, it is not possible to speak of an alliance between scholars about the meaning of these letters. The discussions about the irab and the meaning of al-hurûfu’l-mukataa in classical tafsir books discussed in the article.
