In this study, while examining the reflections of the concept of melancholy in the art of painting, examples of some of the works of some painters whose melancholy was effective in their paintings are given. In the second half of the eighteenth century and the nineteenth century, the artist, who is a part of the society, and its effect on the art, and the new approaches in the expression of the content, which show an improvement in the art of painting, are included. In the light of the importance given by the flows of Romanticism and Symbolism to emotion and the individual, some studies have been made on the melancholic effects of this emotional transference in the works. The effects of the events that took place during the period of the artists were investigated and in this context, the art understanding of Arnold Böcklin, who directed the melancholic concepts such as death and loneliness, was mentioned in his paintings, and analyzes were made on the works of Arnold Böcklin. The causes of the subjects he discussed in his paintings, the effect of melancholy on the relationship between the artist and his work were investigated.
