Negotiations that have been going on for a settlement in Cyprus for many decades have come to a promising point due to new geopolitical developments related to the energy politics. The discovery of new natural gas resources in the East Mediterranean around southern Cyprus and Israel necessitates the safe transportation of these hydrocarbon resources through Turkey towards Europe, which severely lacks alternative energy resources due to ongoing tension between European Union and Russian Federation related to the Ukrainian crisis. Thus, a new period of settlement seems inevitable in Cyprus. In this process, the idea of Mediterranean Union which seems to be forgotten in recent years can also become on fashion in new geopolitical designs.
