Muqâtil; while interpreting some verses about prophets, holy books, Adam and Eve, Ahl-i Kitâp, Jahiliyya, sirah, who the verses were sent down, angels, heaven, hell, the virtue of surahs, creation and human history he made explanations in many places over round numbers such as one thousand, ten thousand, seventy thousand, five hundred thousand and one million. In our opinion, the numbers except the sirah, the Jahiliyya and who the verses were sent down are based on the isrâîlî narrations and their accuracy is open to discussion. However, the numbers used by Muqâtil about the the verses, sirah and Jahiliyya period have an important function in terms of reflecting the revelation period and determining the meaning of the verses. Therefore, the numbers in this range are true, and the other ones are used in the context of terghib and terhib as well as in the subjects of heaven and hell. For, as in the creation of angels, it is not possible for people to know or describe unseen issues in terms of nature and numbers. In this article, rather than the numbers in the Quran, the numbers used by Muqâtil while interpreting the verses are discussed.
