The establishment of the National Vocational Qualification System coordinated by the Vocational Qualifications Authority in Turkey requires three basic steps: the establishment of a national occupational standard; the preparation of national qualifications based on the standard and coordination of the assessment and evaluation procedures for the profession/job based on the national qualifications. Within this scope, extensive work has been carried out for translation profession since 2012.A national occupational standard is defined as the minimal norm including knowledge, skills, behavior and manners required for a successful practice of a profession or an occupation. The National Occupational Standard for Translators (Level 6) was published in the Official Gazette in 2013. On the other hand, vocational qualifications are more comprehensive documents prepared on the basis of the national standards and they are used to describe the testing and assessment procedures required for the observation of knowledge, skills and competences an individual should possess for the practice of the occupation/job. The European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning and the European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education Area are used as the basis for the national vocational qualifications and these qualifications are integrated into the national qualifications framework.
