The literature includes a limited number of studies concerning the problems experienced during psychiatry nursing internship by students and their suggestions. The present study aimed to examine the problem areas faced by a group of intern nurses during psychiatry nursing practices and the suggestions they made for the improvement of this practice. The study was carried out at the Faculty of Nursing in the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year as a qualitative phenomenology study. The sample group of the study was selected using easily accessible case sampling, one of the qualitative sampling methods. The study was participated by 33 intern nurses. Focus group meetings were held as the data collection method. Focus group meetings were held in 4 separate groups with the participation of 8-9 students. The data was collected through open ended questions developed by the researchers based on the sub-problems of the study. Thematic analysis was conducted for the examination and analysis of the data. MAXQDA© was used for coding the data obtained and defining and interpreting the findings. The findings were divided into two groups as the problem areas faced by intern nurses during psychiatry nursing practices and the suggestions they made for the solution of these problems. Problem areas were specified under four themes as theorical knowledge, the process of the practice, nursing skills and clinic environment while suggestions were grouped under two themes as the arrangement of the content of the practice and the content of the theoretical course. Intern nurses experience problems about the theoretical education, hospital conditions, lack of knowledge and skills, content of the practice, and problems caused by lecturers and nurses during the psychiatry nursing practices. The students offered solutions that can guide the educators such as spending more time with the lecturer, holding case discussions, practicing in smaller groups, starting the practices right after the theoretical education and working with a mentor nurse.
