Abstract

Author(s): Yusuf ESMER, Muhammet YÜKSEL

It is seen that unethical behaviors in today's organizations are increasing and diversifying day by day. At the beginning of this unethical behavior is sycophancy. Sycophancy is a situation where an individual can benefit from unreasonable respect and admiration against a number of authorities such as administrators and politicians in order to provide benefits. Sycophancy is seen as an important obstacle to fair management, merit, success and development. In this sense, sycophancy causes managers to fail to see the real situation and cause failure and unrest in organizations. This study discusses the level of sycophancy in organizations. For this purpose, firstly, the concept of flattery is explained and then the subject of sycophancy is discussed with examples. It is thought that this study will raise awareness and contribute to the literature about the unethical behavior of sycophancy, which is not considered in business life.
