There are many studies related to the population issue that based on the Ottoman census records. Nevertheless there is only well-known alternative source as named Fiscal Registration Notebooks, which were, hold for the purpose of taxpayers record above the regular census record during Ottoman Empire. However there are other sources to find clues on the population records such as avar?z, temettüat and administrative records books that offer to the historians as an alternative documents to search the population number. An administrative notebook that was hold for the Samsun’s muhtar (district ruler) and imams (mosque prayer) obtains important clues on the matter of the population. In the notebook the settlement place names were recorded while indicating and summarizing the population and migrants as well.
