Âdile Sultan, daughter of Sultan Mahmut II and Zernigar Hanim, was born ?stanbul in 1826. Âdile Sultan was highly educated, having received private lessons in religion, literature, music and calligraphy by famous teachers of her time. In 1845, she was married to Mehmet Ali Pasha. She gave birth to four children, three of whom died at an early age. Deeply affected by the death of her beloved husband as well as that of her only daughter in 1869, she dedicated herself to worship and charities, establishing altogether fourteen charitable foundations. Âdile Sultan died in 1899. In accordance with her will, all her belongings were sold and donated to poor people. Her many of properties was used as a school.
