The fact of terminating life of fetus in consequence of mother’s occupation or any foreign intervention is a popular subject which has occupied the agenda throughout the human history and has been thoroughly discussed, notably with its medical, religious, ethical and philosophical aspects. In this study, we analyze some outstanding Ottoman fatwa (religious verdict) collections as part of the issue of abortion (isqat al-janin) and interpret related fatawa in consideration of information found in classical Hanafi texts. In this way, penal results of intervention of fetus’ life will be presented in the light of religious verdicts which are answers of Shaykh al-Islams to Ottoman society’s relevant questions.
