Today, significant amount of world population, are suffering from water scarcity. Azerbaijan, like many other countries, is likely to experience water problems if it does not efficiently manage its water resources. Lack of developed seawage infrastructure in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia causes wastewater to flow to Kura and Aras rivers and their tributaries, which have large reserves in terms of water resources of Azerbaijan. As significant part of the water resources of Kura, Aras and Samur rivers, originate from other countries, water resources are important for Azerbaijan with respect to the economic and strategic (e.g. the security of the country) aspects. The use of water-saving methods in Azerbaijan such as drip irrigation in agriculture can provide significant water savings. Based on an indepth literature review, the aim of this article is to examine the water resources of Azerbaijan and the political economy of water resources.
