Safiye Erol’s novel ‘Ülker F?rt?nas?’, focuses on humane love’s inversion into divine love in thematic terms. Complicated and painful nature of the love between Nuran and Sermet, who represent the East and the West, though partly, inevitably directs the narrator to engage more with the mundane one.
The hot spot of the relationship between Sermet who is introduced in the novel as an easterner, and Nuran, who is introduced as a representative of western discipline and nurture with her educational background on Music in Wien, springs from both the eastwest contradiction and Nuran’s efforts to free herself from ambition of love. The rocky road begins with her learning that Sermet is a married man and expands to be a long-term crisis with Sermet’s mental instabilities, Nuran’s befooling and desires. Narrator’s taking the reader back to the beginning of that ambivalence frequently, can be associated with stages of reaching the divine love along with the novel’s setup.
In this study, answers to the matters as implications on fate of love, quick transitions and bouncing between event fragments, and flashbacks to the beginning of the fiction. Thus, elements, which can be seen as fictional deficiencies, and mystifies the readers’ minds will be emphasized and their correspondences will be determined in terms of the theme.
