Ottoman Empire had entered into a process of disorientation concerning the develpments in Europe in the last century of its history. Thus, an intense mobility of modernization had started among both government executives and Ottoman intelligentsia. Being among the Reform Era intelligentsia; Nam?k Kemal came into prominence with a reputation “Poet of Homeland and Independence”. Nam?k Kemal not only introduced the concepts of modern age such as homeland, nation, independence, equality, parliamentarian system, public dominance to the Turkish society, but also left his mark on an era with his influence on the next eras. By this way, he established a romantic cult of historiography that was peculiar to our culture. This study evaluates Nam?k Kemal’s thoughts about Islam, homeland, independence and nation by using some of his works like Ottoman History, Homeland or Silistre, Cezmi, Mr Âkif, Gülnihal, A Eulogy on Independence.
