This article aims to deal with social suffering. Suffering is a social and cultural phenomenon which is constructed by social reality and which constructs social reality. Human beings establish social institutions, which form society, in order to protect themselves from the destructive outcomes and uncertainties brought about by suffering. Furthermore, it is socially and culturally constructed experience whose reason, result, meaning, content, explanation, practice and performance are created through social interaction, which is the motive for permanent structural changes and, which can be reconstructed in accordance with social changes. In this article, firstly, suffering whose character constructed by social reality and impacts that create social reality and institutions was pointed out. Secondly, social suffering was explained as the main motive for social and cultural change in the case of Weber’s analysis on capitalism. Thirdly, multifaceted interaction between social suffering and cultural change was discussed in the case of relationship between modernity and rational myths. Finally, the interaction between social change and experience of suffering was discussed in the case of modernity.
