Abstract Although today, except celebrations, telegraph nearly is not used widely, some 150 years ago was the fastest means of communication. While the telegraph was used in the world in the 1840s, it was brought into service in the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. After the second half of the 19th century, it could be seen that the telegraph became widespread in Anatolia. After the Telegraph Administration was established in 1855 in Istanbul in order to be governed of telegraph services in the Ottoman State, telegraph offices were opened in other cities of the country. In order to educate the qualified personnel to work in these offices, a school for telegraph was opened in 1861. Although there are some studies on the general situation in the Ottoman Empire of telegraph services, there is not enough research on the telegraph administration offices in the provinces. Therefore, as a local research, we deal with the Telegraph Administration Office of Giresun and the construction of its telegraph building. During the researching of literature on the subject, we did not meet any specific study related to the topic. However, the topic has been partly evaluated in the Ph.D thesis 3 of Oktay Karaman and the book named Dou Karadeniz Arat?rmalar? 4 of Ayhan Yüksel. In this study, we will use both the above-mentioned studies and documents of Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive, yearbooks of Trabzon together with other research works. The aim of this paper is to make a first study on the Telegraph Administration of Giresun which is a provincial city and the construction of its telegraph building.
