THE CONCEPT AND IDEOLOGY OF NATIONALISM IN ANTHONY H. BIRCHS POLITICAL THEORY

Abstract

Author(s): Hüseyin BAL

A nation is a group that identifies itself as based on a shared understanding of a common language, culture, religion, history, land, and descent. Nationalism as a political ideology is the mobilization of a nation in pursuit of political goals. In this study, the concept and ideology of nationalism has been examined and scrutinized in the light of Anthony H. Birch’s views, who is among the most competent political theorist on this subject and who has treated it in terms of ‘nation building process’ and ‘national integration’ concepts. For him, while in the contemporary world we all live under the political authority of the national state within whose borders we reside, today there’s a common misunderstanding about nationalism term.
