Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of game-based teaching on the success of students and their retention of learning in the lessons of religious culture and ethics. The study was carried out for ten weeks with 94 students studying at ?stiklal Secondary School in ?ahinbey district of Gaziantep province in 2015-2016 academic year. In the study, 6-A and 6-B classes were the experimental group, 6-C and 6-D classes were the control group. In the experimental group, the lessons were taught using educational game method. The traditional didactic teaching method was used the control group. Pretest-posttest design was used for both the control and experimental groups in the study. The pre-test was given before application of the teaching methods; the post-test, the after application and retention, was given after eight weeks from the start of application and was applied to all groups who were participating in the research. In addition, pre-test and post-test were applied to the practice of prayer. The data were analyzed by using the SPSS 23 statistical program. The significance level of the independent-samples t-test was 0.05; The significance level was calculated as 0.01 in the paired-samples t-test. According to the findings of the research; significant differences were found in the favor of experimental group. The method of teaching with educational games is an effective method to increase the success in knowledge and behavior in religious education and to ensure the retention of the learned.
