The Universality of music which is a hypothesis that is often accepted without thinking, suggest that music is understandable for everyone. But the music term in the hypothesis is identified as western music and people who advocatethat hypothesis are often grown up in western culture or affected from it. This idea which accept western music is the most advanced music type and capacity of the others are limited, arrived the conclusion that western music can be understand at the universal scale. However cross-cultural studies which increase since the 20th century illustrates that music can notbe understandable for a person who is not from its culture and meanig of music does not come from only sounds. Moreover it is suggested that depending on their different music concepts, music expectations of different cultures are different and evaluation of music can not be depend on only western concepts. So while concept of universalitywere leaving, relativity of music culture gained importance.
This article which examine concept of the universality of music with exploration of the universals in ethnomusicology will illustrate development of hypotesis of universal music, place of tonality and harmonics in this hypotesis and comparsion of cultural determination of music with universality concept first. Than ethnomusiclogical perspective of exploration of the universals which illlustrate cultural, perceptual and psychophiscal factors in context of similarty between musical processes of different cultures will examine.
