It is stil a matter of debate whether the political and social developments that took place in the historical process from the Tanzimat to the Republic constituted intellectual meaning of Kemalist ideology. Naturally, on one side of this debate, those who think that the new Turk?sh state and its official ideology, Kemalism, is a brand new beginning unrelated to the previous hstorical period, and on the other side, those who claim that the intellectual basis of Kemalism began to take shape in the last centruy of the Ottoman Empire. This duality symbolizes the close proximity of one side to the understanding of the continuity of history while the other side symbolizes the existence of a break away from historical continuity. The purpose of this study is to question the intellectual basis of the Turk?sh Revolution and the Kemalist ideology in terms of shedding light on this debate, on the political-social devolopments that preceded itself, on political thought movements and on the leading intellectuals of the time.
