Abstract This essay is about the ornamentation perception of the village mosques in the east Black Sea region. From Samsun to Artvin the village mosques show a rectangular plan form with flat timber ceilings. Dependent on building material, two kind of ornamentation can be seen in these mosques. One of them is known as carving on wood and stone and the second is the wall painting, which consists of different verses from the Koran and vegetable figures like tulips and chamomile. These ornamentations were produced by local artists and when compared with examples from other regions of Turkey the local characteristics are striking. Nevertheless they should be evaluated as importantly people arts.
