Mehmed Re?ad V, son of Sultan Abdülmecid, was born on 2 November 1844 in Istanbul. Resad, with the dethronement of his brother Abdulhamid II, became the thirty-fifth sultan of the Ottoman Empire on 27 April 1909 when he was 65 years old. During his reign, the state was governed by the management of Union and Progress rather than him. The reign of Sultan Mehmed Resad V was a period of the great depression and wars for the Ottoman Empire. Yet, the Tripoli War, Balkan Wars and the First World War, which had an important impact on the collapse of the state, took place during his reign. Sultan Mehmed Resad V died due to diabetes at the age of 74 on July 3, 1918, at the fag-end of the First World War. The death of the sultan had a broad repercussion in the press. It is seen that Ikdam, Sabah, Tanin, and Vakit, which were the leading newspapers of the period and which serve as references for our research, gave wide coverage to the death of the sultan. The aforementioned newspapers announced the death of the deceased sultan to his readers on the first page and included every stage of the funeral service. However, it is understood from the newspapers reviewed that the death of the sultan had wide coverage not only in the Turkish press but also in the press of the allied states and that the allied states sent condolence telegrams
