Abstract

Author(s): Emel KOÇ

In Modern world, anything humane, social and spiritual has almost never had a decisive role as scientific and technological developments did. The dazzling pace of scientific and technological developments has made human beings subject to many problems such as war, nuclear hazard and environmental problemsandresulted in a loss of his ontologicalmeaningandvalue, andalsoledhimtoquestionwhetherscienceandtechnology display an anti-ethic attitude. In this vein, Gabriel Marcel, a French Philosopher, made striking evaluations with regard to advantages and disadvantages of science and technology. Marcel, consider war in relationtotheattitudethat he calls “abstractionspirit” which is a misuse of abstraction. For Marcel, “ the spirit of abstraction has its origins in the passions”. Passions are fed by desires and greed. Marcel expresses that, once we figure out the aspects of the spirit of abstraction based on grudge and passion, we can understand that it can counts as a factor for fanatic tendencies and violence and as a reason for war
