The Balkans were leading as one of the most important cultural and art centers in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire gave special importance in the development of this region and made every investment in order to make it the political and cultural center. The settlement of the Turkish nation here happened in the early 5th century. With the conquests after the 14th century the region started to be called Rumelia. As well as political conquests, with the settlement and guidance activities of the religious mystics the region soon became an important center. Many cities like Üsküp, Prizren, Pri?tine, Bosnia, Yeni?ehir Fenar, Salonica hosted innumerable poets as a cultural center. Many poets from Rumelia are stated in ?uara Tezkire(s). The place and importance of literature developed in the Balkans is huge in Classical Turkish Literature. Poets from Rumelia who appreciated a more extrovert and realistic poetry understanding than the other poets from other parts of the Ottoman Empire immensely contributed to Classical Turkish Poetry. Having a critical place in the Balkan history, Salonica also has a special place in terms of not only in the history of Christianity and Judaism but also Islam. In the city which hosted a cultural mosaic with different cultures living together, innumerable political figures, state officials, religious mystics, intellectuals and poets who shed light to Turkish history were raised during the Ottoman reign. In this paper, the historical and cultural importance of Salonica will be touched upon and then general information about divan poets born in this city will be given in the light of ?uara tezkires.
