19th century is an important period in the history of Russian Oriental studies. In this period, many important works have been made on the history, culture and language of the Ottoman Empire and distinguished scholars emerged in Russia. One of them is Vasili Dimitrievich Smirnov. With the contribution of his works, Ottoman studies became a separated academic discipline in Russia. In this article, Smirnov’s views on Ottoman history and culture have been explained with citations from his works. In addition, his important role on the development of Ottoman studies in Russia has been underlined.
